Summer break? Nonsense.
In July and August, Maarten Roorda, owner of Proeflokaal Hooghoudt, organises the popular Summer Chess. Boards are set up inside the pub, on the terrace, and if needed, even around it.
In the summer of 2025, around 150(!) players participated. Some played just a few games, while others played nearly every possible match.

Everyone is welcome at Summer Chess. You don’t need to be a member of SISSA or any chess club. There is always an opponent for you.

About Summer Chess
The competition starts sometime in July and ends in August. Every Wednesday we begin with four rapid games. You are free to join or leave whenever you like, as long as you coordinate with the competition organiser present.
There are daily prizes for each playing day. And of course, we keep track of the overall standings across all sessions. At the end of Summer Chess, the winners receive prizes.
